Why Behavior Happens: A Simple Framework for Families

When behavior feels overwhelming at home, it’s easy to assume something is “wrong.” In reality, behavior follows predictable patterns.

In this video, I introduce a simple framework to help families understand why behavior occurs. We’ll walk through the ABC pattern—Antecedent, Behavior, and Consequence—and discuss how understanding this structure can shift the question from “How do we stop this?” to “What is this behavior accomplishing?”

This foundational concept is central to caregiver-mediated behavior support. When caregivers understand behavior patterns, they can implement practical, effective strategies within everyday routines.

Future videos will explore how to apply this framework at home and in community settings.
